Martin Greenhorn, a librarian who seems to have taken an interest in various regulars at the library: Lilly Lightbread Sunnyglade, forest gnome cleric of knowledge (???) Tiyees, tiefling sorcerer (???) Flint, dwarf barbarian (university gardener) Grumman Tinbeard, dwarven fighter (civil engineering grad student) Shia Nailo, wood elf monk (kinesiology undergrad) assigns various tasks - Grumman and Shia to collect one overdue book, Lilly and Tiyees another; meanwhile Flint encounters some garden gnomes engaging in a bit of explosive pest extermination. None of the tasks are performed well, although the books are recovered and the pest(s) exterminated. But the great ire of many engineering students of a certain sorority (who really needed to read that book on bridges) is earned, and many shadowy tentacles are evoked (who seem destined to engage in acts of petty larceny) despite having access to the correct book, and small flaming mammals fly to an explosive demise in a scene which can only be summarized by the phrase "Ready when you are, C.B.!" Banished from the presence of campus life, the unfortunates spend their time toiling in the nightly labor of book maintenance and sorting, far from the eyes of those embarassed by the entirely unavoidable results of their librarian duties. Lilly happens to notice an interesting book that, when pointed out to Martin, becomes a lead to a rather more interesting (and quite overdue) book that seems likely to be in the possession of kobolds in the sewers below the city. Expedition time! Unfortunately, after having met a pair of kobold locals, Martin is called away by some emergency and heads back to campus, leaving instructions to "stay right there". The kobolds have a more interesting offer to go look at something really cool, came back, and not tell anyone we were gone. The cool thing is like unto an underground cathedral full of waterfalls. The uncool thing is when the smaller kobold loses her footing and is taken away by the waterflow. The rest follow, hoping they can retrieve her and make their way back. One waterslide later (and much wetter), the group finds her and several large frogs. After a brief altercation, the frogs are beaten off and the kobold saved. Several items of interest are found in the frog lair (sandals, a sharpened stick with some beads), even a handful of silvers. The dwarves manage to scale the waterslide, and with a rope and strong helpers, so does everyone else. Now thoroughly soaked, the group heads to the kobold village to recover (although mum's the word on getting into a dangerous situation). At the kobold village, Shia is taken in by a motherly kobold, but the others sneak into the shaman's tend to borrow his pearl and identify the sandals, which turn out to be of swamp running (a.k.a., water walking). However, it takes long enough (along with a bit of discussion) that they're walked in on by Martin and the shaman. Fortunately, nothing too incriminating is overhead. Reproachments are given, and arrangements for return of the book are made (sorting the shaman's library among other things).
